Oncegone, but never forgotten ...
The revival of
PlastiScopewasborn in1969when the lateRalphT. Brotz, president andCEOof Plenco,
asked a youngmanwho recently joined the company as assistant to the president to create
andproduce a periodic printednewsletter for the employees of PlasticsEngineering.
The young man, a native of Sheboygan and a recent graduate of Northwestern
University’s Medill School of Journalism in Chicago, organized and directed the project
until 1972whenhe became director of public affairs forKohler Co.
Abandof volunteerPlenco reporterswas recruited, aphotographer by thenameof Eric
Jaeger was engaged to capture Plenco benchmarks on film, and a printer was hired to
handle layouts andproduction.
Subsequently over the next 35 years, PlastiScope was transformed into a variety of
formats and content, but it always kept the samename. Finally in2002, interestwaned and
the newsletter ceasedpublication.
But many employees missed the opportunity to read a publication produced for and by the employees. Mike Brotz, Plenco
president and CEO, and son of Ralph Brotz, was asked by a number of employees in recent years whether PlastiScope could be
resuscitated.
At the annual employeemeetings last April,Mike announced that indeedPlastiScopewouldbe reborn as an electronic employee
newsletterwith theextendedname, PlastiScope21, reflecting its21st centurydigital dimensions thatwouldmake thepublicationmore
interesting and relevant to today’s employees and their families.
Mike asked that same youngman, now considerably older and president of aWashington, DC-based international communica-
tions company, to once again lead the effort to create and produce the now-monthly Plenco e-newsletter you are reading on your
screen.
Thus the PlastiScope21 Inaugural Issuewas born! Andby theway, thatman’s name is JimHarff!
